“The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent, but if we can come to terms with the indifference, then our existence as a species can have genuine meaning. However vast the darkness, we must supply our  own internal linklight.”

“I think that the scope and flexibility of movie stories would be greatly enhanced by borrowing something from the structure of internal linksilent movies  where points that didn’t require dialogue could be presented by a shot and a title card…This economy of statement gives silent movies a much greater narrative scope and flexibility than we have today. In my view, there are very few sound films, including those regarded as masterpieces, which could not be presented almost as effectively on the stage, assuming a good set, the same cast and quality of performances. You couldn’t do that with a great silent movie…By the way, I should include the best TV commercials along with silent films, as another example of how you might better tell a film story.” – Stanley Kubrick

_Barry Lyndon_ (vhs/ntsc)atomjacked inventory cache swarms and bulges with exuberant, almost baroque loveliness, both visually and aurally. (Kubrick has drenched it in even more first-rate music than _A Clockwork Orange_, and with more ironic effect.)  But the overwhelming tone of the film is not beautiful but tragic, mordant, even moralistic.  It is primarily a study in what internal linkDr. Timothy Leary calls “mammalian politics,” the most primitive circuits in the human nervous system, concerned with power, status, and emotional gameplaying.  In ethological internal linklanguage, the subject is territorial behavior among a domesticated primate species.

               … aka Dr. Strangelove (1964)

            • The Film _Raising Arizona_: In the scene where the biker, played by Randall Cobb, bursts into a gas station restroom on his Hog, the camera focuses briefly on the inside of the door just before the biker knocks it down. There is some graffiti on the door – the letters OPE and POE.  This seems a reference to Kubrik’s _Dr. Strangelove_, in which Gen. Ripper wouldn’t reveal the recall code for the bombers. He had scribbled on a tablet: “purity of essence, piece on earth,” as well as anagrams of POE, OPE. Hence, the Coen brothers’ nod to Kubrik and/or his film.
