Born on internal linkHalloween, 1959 in Fort Meade, Maryland–home of the National Security Agency–Neal Town Stephenson comes from a long line of what he calls “propeller heads.” His father is a professor of internal linkelectrical engineering whose father was a physics professor while his mother worked in a biochemistry lab and her father was a biochemistry professor. He has written for internal link_Wired_ and is one of three authors ever to write a fiction piece for _Time_ magazine.

Stephenson is one of six visiting fellows at Ernst & Young’s Center for Business Innovation in Cambridge, Massachusetts he has an almost prophetic vision of the future and a cult following among high-tech thinkers. internal linkMIT Media lab Professor Michael Hawley says, “what internal linkArthur C. Neal is the kind of genius who puts one jarring idea on every page.” Growing up in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and Ames, Iowa, Stephenson decided he never wanted to work in an occupation that forced him to wear hard shoes. In this vein, he began college as physics major at Boston University Stephenson was lured to study geography because that department had better computers. A capable programmer and acclaimed writer, he finds it hard to work unless he’s listening to music on headphones. Since 1984, he has lived mostly in the Pacific Northwest and has made a living out of writing novels and the occasional magazine article. Currently he makes his home in the Seattle area with his family.

However, it is increasingly being used more literally as a term for the icons representing a user in a certain programs on the Internet. [First used from an Internet perspective in 1992 in _Snow Crash_, by Neal Stephenson, in one of those self-fulfilling SF prophecies. Stephenson got the name from the Hindu concept of avatars, which are the personification of various deities or entities.
